I have been writing about trikes and sidecar rigs for a few years now and the sightings of these sleds has drastically increased lately. This is probably because the average age of the biker keeps getting older. Hence the strong push by Harley to attract younger riders. But this is all speculation on my part. What I do know is that more and more disabled riders are getting back into the saddle. I met a man in Florida at the Willie’s Tropical Tattoo Chopper show who was missing a leg and specialized in making really badass chopper trikes. I have met folks who couldn’t walk, but had made racks for their wheelchairs on or behind sidecars. And now, there is a new alternative.
A group of engineering students at the University of Minnesota created a landing gear type contraption that automatically lowers as a bike comes to a stop. The reason, specifically to give paraplegics the opportunity to get on and ride. And there is a particular recipient for this model, Scott Tyson from Calgary, Alberta lost the use of his legs 16 years ago and is now going to be able to ride again.
