Perhaps my favorite tattoo artist of all time… if not, one of the top… and perhaps more importantly, one of my favorite contemporary artists today… which I think means a lot considering I ain’t no slouch in the realm of contemporary art… I am an art professor for gods sakes.

Anyway, Nick Baxter is a remarkable man, an awe inspiring artist, and an unbelievable tattooist.  At the moment, he has an exhibition in Portland.  If you are in the area in any stretch imaginable, please stop in to check out the show.  I am going to post a few images from the exhibition and perhaps even supply a few of my personal observations and critiques.   Until then, be sure to see it if you can and be sure to check Nick out on his website:

Reclaiming

by Nick Baxter

July 7 – July 30, 2011

NISUS GALLERY

328 NW Broadway (at Flanders) #117Portland, OR 97209

Opening Reception: Thursday, July 7th, 2011 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm

Gallery Hours: Saturdays from 12:00 – 5:00 pm and by appointment

Nisus Gallery is pleased to present Reclaiming, a show of all new works by Nick Baxter. This series of paintings illustrate the recovery of a physical and spiritual connection to the living world. This connection not only supports our existence, but comprises our very bodies and consciousness. Baxter’s technical style, which merges the classic trompe l’œil aesthetic with allegorical themes, lets viewers witness this process of reclamation.

You probably know him… or at least his work.  Nick is a prolific tattoo artist and someone I am very, very lucky to call a friend.  I am also lucky to wear a sleeve of his work on my arm, so you know I put my money where my mouth is.  Whenever I would go in for a long session, Nick would help me take my mind off the pain by talking art.  Specifically, Tromp Loei’l realism… And Nick has become a master at it.  Both on canvas and on skin.

You can read my writing about him here if you like, but this post is about his latest achievement which is a book called Sharp Focus Realism in Oil.  This manual not only showcases Baxter’s amazing images, but also delves into the technical and mental skills needed to create this kind of work.  I will own it because I am an artist, many will own it because they are tattoo artists, and more still will own it because they are collectors of fine art and/or derma graphics.

Regardless of why you want it on your shelf, be sure to pick it up.  And to see more of Baxter’s work, hit his website.  I guarantee you will be blown away.

I can’t believe it has been a year since the last Evian Tattoo Convention.  While I did not attend, my friends Nate Beavers, Nick Baxter, and Jeff Ensminger were all there as well as other bad-ass tattoo artists from the States and around the globe!  Well, Nate packed up his new bride this week and has headed back to France for a little working honeymoon.

If you are in the area and can make this event, I would highly recommend it.  Hours are as follows: Friday : 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm, Saturday : 10:00 am to 11:00 pm, Sunday : 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, Admission is 10 Euros and is free for those under 16.  For a list of attending artists as well as location and schedule of events, check out the website at: www.eviantattoo.com

SEPTEMBER 2009: This month in my new hometown of Austin, I have some paintings included in an annual juried exhibition of Austin artists. From over 300 entries, only a limited number are chosen, so I’m proud to be included. If you live in this area, feel free to check out the show. The pieces accepted were my recent triptych consisting of “Fight Mechanism,” “Truth Revealed,” and “Future Dead.”

Also this month i’ll be at 2 conventions, Hell City (Phoenix) and Paradise Gathering (Mass.). I’m completely booked for both shows but I’ll be selling painting books and fine art, participating in forums, and trying to hang out and see my friends from all over, so come say hi.

This Friday, my good friend and the man who did my sleeve, Nick Baxter will be sharing a gallery with the talented Mr. Adrian Dominic (www.adriandominic.com) in the Phoenix area.  Nick now lives in Austin, TX and Adrian hails from the Valley of the Sun.  The Gallery, Pravus Gallery, is located at 501 E. Roosevelt; Phoenix, AZ 85004 (www.pravusgallery.com)

The following comes from Mr. Baxter’s homepage… www.nickbaxter.com

A month from now I’ll be having a split show with friend and artistic collaborator Adrian Dominic in his hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. The opening reception will be on Friday, August 7, beginning around 8pm and coinciding with the huge First Friday art walk that the city holds every month. Adrian will be showing a new group of new paintings, which I can say, are awesome and have some really important symbolism in them for people considering the dilemmas we face in today’s world. My part of the show will be a slight departure from my usual: a group of new photographs I’ve been working on over the past year that deal with the roots of human aggression and suffering, and the process of personal growth and healing from those things. If you’re in that area come check it out and say hello to us at the opening!

Please go and represent for me… run up on Nick and give him a big ol’ hug for me (it will probably freak him out).  And keep your eye here, as Adrian is someone I have selected to showcase in the Tattoosday section of this blog.
