Lots going on during Sturgis week and here is the third installment of the news that you may have missed and might be interested to know.  Please note that not everything in this digest actually happened IN Sturgis… some of the news is from other happenings around the country, but if you were in Sturgis this year, you may have missed it.

Through the first Saturday, the official start date of the rally, 261 citations had been issued in connection with the Sturgis event, compared to 239 citations issued at the same stage last year.

This year’s citations included 45 DUI arrests, up from 40 by the same time last year, but only one felony drug arrest, down from ten.

Eleven injury accidents had been recorded, compared with 10 at this point last year.

Mongols MC member, Christopher Ablett, 36, plead not guilty July 29 in U.S. District Court in San Francisco to charges of murder in aid of racketeering and two gun-possession charges in the September slaying of Mark “Papa” Guardado, the head of the Hells Angels’ “Frisco” chapter.   Ablett turned himself in to police in Oklahoma in October. He is being held without bail at a downtown Oakland jail and returns to court Aug. 12.

Indian Motorcycle Company displayed the new 2010 Chief Bomber and Dark Horse to the public for the first time. The show truck was on display at 4th and Lazelle Street in downtown Sturgis as well as the Buffalo Chip and featured Indian Motorcycle accessories as well.  Check out the new bikes at www.indianmotorcycle.com

$61,600 was the official amount that was raised by the Sturgis Lengends Ride.  Again, proceeds go to charity (Black Hills Children’s Home and the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame and Museum).  This is approximately a $21,000 increase over last year!  Fantastic job gang.

Rally attendance was down, as has been the case the past few years.  Reports that vendor permits remained about the same have been made, which makes us think that at least the vendors have not yet given up… Still, plenty of people attend and I know a lot of folks who are more than happy to see attendance down as it makes the riding easier and less crowded.

Main Street had a Sons of Anarchy mock clubhouse all set up for folks to walk through.  The new season is starting soon and I am sure a lot of people are sitting on the edge of their seats to see what happens this go around.

Drunken-driving arrests were up, and so were injury accidents this year at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

The annual rally officially concluded Friday, but many bikers come early or linger after rally week throughout the Black Hills.

Through Saturday, there were 316 DUI arrests at this year’s rally compared with 253 last year, according to the state Highway Patrol.

There were 72 injury accidents this year compared with 60 last year, the patrol said.

But there were fewer arrests this year than last for offenses other than DUI. This year’s total was 199 misdemeanor drug and felony arrests. Last year’s total was 232.

Sturgis 2009… the reports have been coming in for the past ten or twelve days and here is the digested version of what has been going down.  For those that didn’t make it this year, start planning to be there next year.  Hell, drop me a note and you can plan to meet up with me and the boys while you are there.

Bruce Rossmeyer, Harley mogul and owner of 15 dealerships, was killed in a motorcycle accident on the way to meet the Hamsters MC in Wyoming.  He was passing a truck and trailer on the left and did not see the vehicle signaling for a left hand turn.  Unfortunately, Rossmeyer collided with the truck and was thrown under the rear wheels.  Over 1000 people attended his funeral in Ormond Beach.  During the funeral procession, a motorcycle hearse that was led by 20 motorcycles and followed by 30 more carried Rossmeyer.  Unfortunately, six of the lead motorcycles officers ended up crashing into one another leaving two injured.  Luckily, the accident was not serious, the officers were not badly hurt, and the damage to their bikes was minor.[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9zSlt0lJeQ]

headlines0808n6We all know that the weather at the rally can, and often does, turn on a dime, but this year it seems that there were more storms than ever before.  And the hail, oh the hail!  When my Ol’ Lady and I were on our honeymoon in Sturgis 2003, I remember the hail coming out of nowhere.  I immediately laid down on the tank to protect the bike, leaving my poor bride to fight off the hail as we sailed down the highway with nothing to protect her from the little balls of ice… poor girl.  Anyway, this year saw 2 and 3-inch diameter hail that broke windows, dented cars and bikes, and injured at least two people.  I bet Little d wasn’t there with me this time!

Steven Tyler of Aerosmith was taken to a hospital after falling from stage during a concert at the Buffalo Chip. Tyler, 59, was on the stage’s catwalk when he fell. Tyler is recovering in Boston with a broken shoulder and stitches in his head.  The Aerosmith tour is now on hold.[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uXRTWuk3XM&feature=fvw]

We have just heard from the folks at the Sturgis Rally Headquarters that there will be a new law in affect for this year’s rally. The City of Sturgis has passed a new parking/storage ordinance that “prohibits parking or storage of any trailer, recreational vehicle, implement, vehicle or other personal property on any public right-of-way.”

It includes:
A) leaving any car, pick up, motorcycle, camper or RV in any public right of way for more than five (5) consecutive days; B) Leaving any farm tractor, implement, trailer, truck or truck tractor in any public right of way for more than twenty-four (24) hours; or C) During the period of July 20-August 15, leaving any RV or camper in any public right of way for more than twenty-four (24) hours.

Items being stored in violation of this ordinance will be subject to fines and the police department will tow the vehicle. Special permission for temporary storage needs may be granted in advance form the PD. For further info call Sturgis PD 605.347.5070
